Under the title "Local Government and the Changing Urban-Rural Interplay" (LoGov), an international research project was launched in 2019, focusing on the challenges faced by municipalities and cities in the context of urban-rural dynamics. During the final conference in Vienna on September 12th and 13th, the key findings were once again highlighted and transferable best practices were jointly discussed. The interdisciplinary project brought together 18 partner organizations from six continents to analyze and improve the conditions and needs of urban and rural municipalities worldwide. As a result, a global network of science, research, and practice was formed, which collaboratively developed solutions and recommendations for local governments.
Key Project Achievements
- 117 international secondments promoting global knowledge exchange
- 5 comprehensive reports on local responsibilities and public services, local financial arrangements, structure of local government, intergovernmental relations of local governments and people’s participation in local decision making.
- 16 country reports outlining the dynamics of local governance in diverse contexts.
Continuation of International Collaboration
Although the conference in Vienna marked the official close-out of the LoGov project, activities are set to continue in order to ensure the sustainability of the results. Plans include the creation of a LoGov knowledge hub that will share resources, tools, and best practices for local governance reform worldwide, as well as joint publications and policy advisory services to bring the research findings into the political discourse and to local government practice.
